Gianluigi Donnarumma States Pep Aims to Improve His Footwork
The Italian international has expressed confidence that working under Manchester City's manager will enhance his skills with the ball at his feet. He also revealed that City had shown strong interest in acquiring his services prior to the recent window.
Surprise Move from PSG
Donnarumma completed a move from PSG for around £30 million on deadline day. This move raised eyebrows due to perceptions that the shot-stopper is not as skilled with his feet compared to departed players like Ederson or recent acquisition James Trafford.
Responding to Critics
When questioned on criticism regarding his distribution skills, he responded: “I am always striving to improve, and now I’m with a coach who is the best in these areas. He will guide me, and together we can achieve a lot.”
He added, “Anticipating danger is crucial—there are times you can play out, and other times you must go long, particularly during critical situations.”
Trusting the Approach
Donnarumma expressed certainty that Guardiola’s style would work well with him between the posts. “Absolutely. Each match requires unique planning. The manager will get us ready in the best possible way,” he said.
A New Chapter
After winning the European trophy with Paris Saint-Germain last season, Donnarumma experienced a Club World Cup defeat to Chelsea in July. He revealed, “I was aware that Manchester City were very interested in me earlier this year. The interest strengthened after the tournament. Learning that the manager was pushing for my arrival spurred me.”
Moving On
Donnarumma preferred not to dwell on previous contract talks or claims from PSG officials. “I focus on the future. My goal was to come to this club—it was my only option,” he stated.
Homecoming Challenge
The club are preparing to face Napoli in their Champions League opener. The keeper, originating in the region, was developed at Napoli in his early years. His mother backs the Italian side. “My mum is torn—I'm hopeful she’ll be on my side,” he remarked.
Opposition Watch
Napoli, managed by Antonio Conte, are expected to field former United player Scott McTominay and loaned striker Rasmus Højlund. Also of note, the Belgian playmaker—formerly of City—has made a impressive beginning in Serie A with two goals in his first few games.
Guardiola commented on De Bruyne’s settling-in: “Top players adapt rapidly. His talent is incredible—awareness, distribution, and goal threat. He is one of a kind. It will be good to catching up post-game.”
