Debunking Venezuelan Victory Footage and AI Images of Maduro.

Synthetic pictures purporting to portray Venezuela's president detained after his capture by the American authorities have garnered tens of millions of impressions online.

The Way Fake Pictures of the President Emerged Within Hours

The first inauthentic synthetic picture seemingly showing him being escorted off a aircraft circulated a brief time later. This image was not shared any verified government accounts; it was instead published on X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.

Verification involved an AI-watermark detector, confirming the picture was produced or modified with Google AI.

Additional synthetic images began to spread in the following hours, appearing to show different views of Maduro under guard. Discernible identifying marks on these images show they were posted by an Instagram profile named ultravfx.

SynthID indicates these additional pictures were also created or altered Google AI.

Real Photo Posted but Fakes Continued

The former US president posted the genuine photograph of Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. Yet following this confirmation was released, synthetic images continued to spread but were updated to include the grey athletic wear seen on Maduro.

Reverse image searches reveal these altered fabrications were initially shared on TikTok by a graphic design account. Again, analysis confirms the new graphics were produced with Google AI.

Key Points:

  • Synthetic media circulated quickly following the events of the president's apprehension.
  • The initial fabricated picture appeared within hours on social media.
  • Tools like Google’s SynthID helped to identify the pictures as AI-generated.
  • Fake images continued to circulate and be updated even after the release of authentic images.
  • The source of several fabricated images was traced to social media profiles focused on AI art.
