2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it appears they are staking their claim.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Frogs are not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their visibility has markedly increased in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are legitimate Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this rise, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the trend in gaming seems particularly strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year so far.
When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
